Flyfishing season opening in Slovenia

In Slovenia the flyfishing season starts on 1st. of March. But on 1st. of March only few rivers are open for FF. Those are: Sava, Savinja, Radovna, Rižana… Other rivers like Idrijca, Soča, Unica, Kokra etc opens on 1st. of April.
Anyway me and my friend  started flyfishing season at Sava River (Fishing Club Radovljica).  It was quite warm and sunny day, water level was low, but it was perfect for some nimph fishing. We used some small nimps like Tommy nimph and I tell you, we had crazy flyfishing that day.
Fish was hungry and we were  catching them one after another. It really suprised me that we mostly caught graylings. I think we caught about 30 graylings in a few hours, few rainbow trouts and one brown trout.

So we started FF season successfully. Welcome!

The choice of the destination – searching for hucho

There are always two types of fishermen. There are those who take a fishing trip knowing that will certainly catch fish and do not want to run any risks cathcing no fish and there are those who prefer venturing on places and some rare fish species like it is hucho hucho, the danue salmon. You need to be ready to discover new horizons and commit yourself as self- denial, intuition and a lot of passion just to catch one fish in 5 or 6 days…
It is clear that fishing trip for hucho is not the destination for those who expect to catch a lot of fish in an easy way and with no effort, but that fish would bring you so much joy if you catch it, that you will remmember that moment once and for all.

Flyfishing for marble trout or danube salmon- hucho hucho

Flyfishing for those two species is almost simmilar. We use mostly 9# or 10# rod, sinking lines and streamers. For marble trout we use usually 7-10cm in lenght, for hucho hucho 10-20cm in lenght of the streamer.
Also the best conditions for flyfishing on marble trout and danube salmon is when water level is rising, getting milky color or even brown color of water.
The very important thing is that fisherman do not wade in the river if it is not necessary. Usually we wade only when crossing the river or so. Also very important is not to make any noise with walking on the shore (espacialy when you have low clear water level). So for the best results you need to cast from the shore.
Often people are making mistake when they stay at one pool too long time. Belive me if the marble trout or danube salmon is hungry, it would take a streamer on a first cast. Casting 5 times in same direction is usually only waste of time. On the picture below you can see how you can cast the pool in appropriate way without wasting time.
With marble trout or danube salmon is just like you need to find those fish who are hungry so ussually when the pool is small size 5 casts are enough, for bigger poool 10-15 casts. If you have no strike, you just move to another pool, simmple is that.

Fishing in Slovenia is a great adventure

Fishing in Slovenia offers you very diverse fishing adventures We can arrange you fishing for a target fish with a different fishing technique. The most exciting is of course fly fishing for trouts and graylings, but also spinning for big predators(like pike, zander, catfish…) is a great adventure too.
In the late autumn and winter time we have season here in Slovenia, for a very special fish – the danube salmon. Fishing for danube salmon is most challenging that you can experience in Slovenia. Besides marble trout the danube salmon is also one of the rarest fish in the world. In Slovenia we are very proud on ability for a successful fishing on both species. Of course you need good conditions for success. For many people those two species are fish of the lifetime.

Spinn fishing and flyfishing on the lakes and rivers in Slovenia

In Slovenia we have many lakes just perfect for fishing on predators like pike, zander, catfish and trout. Besides well known lakes like lake Bled and lake Bohinj, we would like to introduce you also other lakes wich are majestic and quite unknown or hidden. Hidden paths would take you there to fish and relax the unspoiled nature and the beautiful landscape that surrounds the lake in Slovenia. Besides lakes, there are also some rivers (like Vipava river, Ljubljanica river…) where spinning is allowed as well.
